‘Forlorn’ tortoise has his own lonely hearts ad as he’s desperately seeking love

Lonely male, 50, seeks female companion who enjoys digging, eating tomatoes and will take VERY slow strolls around the garden with him.

It’s not exactly your typical lonely hearts ad, but then again, Fred isn’t your typical lonely heart.

The 50-year-old isn’t a man, but a tortoise and the quirky advert was penned by his worried owner Angela Matchett.

Angela explained to The Daily Record that she believes her pet is desperate for some company of his own kind as he constantly wanders around the garden trying to make friends with random shell-shaped objects.

The full advert, which was shared on social media, states that Fred needs “a hardy female who loves the great outdoors and is used to living in a garden.”

It reads: “Hi, my name is Fred, I’m 50 and I’m looking for love.

“I’m used to the outdoor lifestyle. I love cucumber, lettuce and fruit and I am partial to the odd tomato!

“I’m looking for a like-minded lady, who is looking for a new owner and isn’t into tortoise tables or heat lamps.

“Please, please share so I can find a lady friend who is older fashioned and hardy like me.

“I’m willing to share my accommodation (and possibly my lettuce and cucumber.)”

Angela, 54, from Inverurie, Aberdeenshire clarified, for those interested, that Fred is a Hermann’s tortoise that was imported to the UK around 50 years ago.

He previously belonged to Angela’s mother and father-in-law, who lived in London.

When the couple passed away, Fred came to live with Angela and her husband Martin in Scotland.

Speaking about the lonely hearts ad, Angela added: “I did it because he just loves company and he wanders around the garden forlornly.

“He’s about 50 and he could live to be 100, so he’s got a long time left.

“Hopefully there is someone out there who has a hardy outdoor tortoise that’s the same species they are willing to sell, or someone who is looking for someone else to take on theirs.”

Fingers crossed Fred finds love very soon!
